PHI in lab reports

Lab and diagnostic reports identify the patient via name, DOB, MRN, ordering physician, sometimes accession number. Diagnostic imaging headers may include device identifiers and study UIDs that are PHI under HIPAA.

Use cases

  • Research / quality-improvement datasets
  • Tumor boards and case conferences (anonymized presentations)
  • External second-opinion consults
  • Teaching material for residents and medical students

Header-aware detection

Lab reports have predictable header structures (patient block, specimen block, results block). Our analyzer recognizes patient identifier fields and leaves the actual clinical results visible — the diagnosis and values are usually the part you want to keep.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload reports

Single PDF or batch — including scanned reports.

  2. 2

Select Person, Date, Address, Phone, Organization

    Standard PHI sweep.

  3. 3

    Studio review

Confirm that the clinical content is preserved and only identifiers are masked.

  4. 4

    Download

    Rasterized output safe for sharing.

For tumor boards and case conferences

Sharing real cases in teaching settings requires de-identification. One-batch redaction across an entire week's worth of cases keeps prep time minimal.

Frequently asked questions

Does it preserve the clinical values and findings?

Yes — only PII/PHI identifiers are masked. Diagnoses, lab values, and clinical narrative remain visible.

What about images in radiology reports?

Embedded images are kept; text overlaid on images is OCR'd and redacted as detected. For sensitive embedded images (e.g., recognizable faces), use Studio manual masks.

Will MRN be auto-detected?

MRN patterns vary by institution. Add your MRN format to "Always Redact" terms for guaranteed coverage.
