How to Redact a PDF on iPhone or iPad: Safe Methods (2026)
To redact a PDF on an iPhone or iPad safely, do not use the built-in Markup pen: it draws an annotation on top of the page and the text underneath stays in the file. Why Markup on iOS is not redaction

Method 1: redact in the browser (works on any iPhone or iPad)
This is the method that both finds the data and removes it, with nothing to install:
- Open Safari and go to Redact PDF AI.
- Tap the upload area and pick the PDF from Files, or choose a photo of the document from Photos or take one with the camera. JPG and PNG are accepted and come back as a PDF.
- Choose what to remove: names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, organizations, dates, IBANs, card numbers. Scanned pages and photos are read with OCR first.
- Review the redactions. The Studio editor works on a phone screen: tap a mask to keep or remove it, or draw a new one over anything the AI missed.
- Download. Save the flattened PDF to Files, or share it straight from the share sheet. Every page is rasterized, so the redacted text cannot be recovered.

Method 3: the screenshot, and when it is acceptable
Taking a screenshot of the page, blacking out the sensitive part with the Markup pen, and sharing the image does destroy the text: a screenshot is pixels, and Markup edits on a photo are baked into the copy you share. It is a reasonable way to send one page of a bill to a landlord or a support agent. It is not a way to redact a document:
- You get an image, not a PDF, at screen resolution.
- Multi-page files become a pile of screenshots.
- Photos keeps your original, unedited screenshot in the library, and any edit can be reverted there.
- Zoomed-in or thin pen strokes often leave characters partly readable.
